General Roleplaying Tips « Thread Started on Apr 3, 2008, 4:44pm »
Hey All.
Came across a forum with a thread similar to this and thought it might be a good idea to have one here, with general tips for roleplaying and such. Feel free to comment or add your own here.
1. Before participating in a public RP with a character, it may be a good idea to write a small story about your character's background and what kind of person they are to give youself a starting point from which to build upon.
2. Be consistant. You can't be shy one day and then bold the next unless there is a good reason for it, such as a point in the narrative that affects your character dramatically.
3. On a related note, your character does not have to remain exactly the same throughout the entire RP. Indeed, it is highly unlikely that a character could go a long period without changing somewhat. These changes do not have to be major, or even relevant to the main plot, but they do help to expand the character as a whole.
4. Don't burn through your entire character's lifestory in one conversation. Make it gradual, with details being filled in as the RP progresses.
After all, it is highly unlikely that a character would be willing to share their darkest secrets with someone they have only just met, but as relationships between the characters grow and trust is built up, they may reveal more.
5. Try to avoid sterotypes unless you're sure that's who you want to be. Are you comfortable being just another wise old wizard, or barbarian hero, or confident that you can stand out?
Not to say that you should avoid sterotypes completely, they can work very well in some situations, indeed that is the reason they became stereotypes, because they are solid things to draw on.
6. Don't get upset because of in-character remarks or insults, after all they are directed at your character, and not you. Likewise, make sure that any insults or comments you make are directed at the character, and not the person behind them.
7. Don't God-Mod. You are in control of YOUR character, and no-one else's. Godmodding is when your post controls another character, or gives them no chance to act. When something affects another player's character directly, they must be given a chance to respond.
I'll probably add more to this thread as I come across more tips and guidelines and such. As I said, feel free to contribute your own ideas or suggestions.
